In today's technology-driven world, applicant tracking systems rule many companies’ hiring processes. These automated systems screen resumes for certain key terms and phrases that match the job description and rule out any that don't seem to be a match.

Resist the urge to bombard the recruiter or human resources professional on LinkedIn. Instead, go back to basics. I give this simple advice, which works almost every time: Print your resume or cover letter, explain that you applied online (and the dates) but also wanted to make sure it was received, and put it in the mail — yes, mail. You'll be surprised how many phone calls you get based on this simple follow-up.
