Why Most of Us Who Do the Work Suck at Marketing Ourselves on Social Media

You’d think that being great at what you do would make it easy to talk about what you do.

But here’s the truth no one wants to admit:The people who are actually out here doing the work are often the worst at promoting themselves online.

Not because we’re lazy. Not because we don’t care. But because we’re busy building, not broadcasting.

Here’s why this happens (and what to do about it):

1. We’re too close to our own genius.

When something comes easily to you, it doesn’t feel remarkable. You solve million-dollar problems, lead teams, rescue launches, or rework failing systems—but to you, it’s “just Tuesday.”

So when it’s time to post, you freeze. What do I even say?Why would anyone care?

You forget that what’s obvious to you is magic to someone else.

2. We have receipts—but no rhythm.

You’ve got the results. You’ve built the thing. But social media rewards consistency, not just credibility.

And if you’re deep in delivery mode 90% of the time, carving out space to “narrate the journey” feels like an extra job you didn’t sign up for.

Let me guess:By the time you think of posting, it’s 10pm and you’re half-asleep eating protein snacks over your laptop.

3. We’re allergic to fluff.

You scroll your feed and see people who haven’t done the work post perfectly branded carousels, hot takes, and “thought leadership” that sounds like it was written by ChatGPT in 2022.

It’s exhausting.

So instead of joining the noise, you say nothing. But silence doesn’t serve your impact. It only hides it.

4. We think we need to “perform” instead of just tell the truth.

Here’s the real kicker:You don’t need a personal brand, a niche aesthetic, or a funnel to start.

You just need to show up with what you know, what you’ve seen, and what you’re learning.Teach. Reflect. Share. Rant. Celebrate. Invite.

People don’t hire you because you’re an algorithm expert. They hire you because of the way you think—and how you help them see and solve differently.

5. We don’t make the invisible visible.

Your work changes people’s lives, businesses, or careers. But the transformation happens behind the scenes.

If you don’t pull back the curtain, no one sees the value. They assume you’re quiet because you’ve got nothing going on—which couldn’t be further from the truth.

So what now?

Here’s your reminder:Visibility isn’t vanity. It’s access.

The more you show your work, your thinking, and your presence—the more the right people will recognize your value before they ever hop on a call.

You don’t need to become an influencer. You just need to stop hiding.

You’ve already done the hard part: the work. Now let’s make sure the world knows it.
